La Sagrada Familia

This is the most amazing and complex piece of architecture and design you could hope to see. I have included just a few of the numerous photographs taken in two visits. Firstly in 2015, and then again in 2017 when it was possible to ascend to the roof.

Construction of the Sagrada Familia began in 1882 under architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. Gaudí took over the project in 1883 and transformed it into his magnum opus. He worked on the church until his death in 1926. Gaudí’s design for the Sagrada Familia is a fusion of Gothic and Art Nouveau styles. The church is characterized by its organic forms, its use of natural materials, and its intricate ornamentation.

The Sagrada Familia is divided into three facades: the Nativity Facade, the Passion Facade, and the Glory Facade. The Nativity Facade is the most complete of the three facades. It is decorated with scenes from the life of Jesus Christ, including his birth, baptism, and resurrection. The Passion Facade is still under construction. It is decorated with scenes from the Passion of Christ, including his crucifixion and death. The Glory Facade is the largest of the three facades.

Construction is now expected to be completed by 2026, the centenary of Gaudí’s death.
